Experiential learning opportunities, such as the higher education practicum trip to London, England to visit United Kingdom institutions of higher education were eye-opening understanding the inner workings of this field. With experiential learning being such a large focal point of community engagement work, I think it is fitting for me to reflect on these experiences that I have had as well.

One of the greatest pieces of learning in my time at Florida State University has sprouted from interactions with members of my cohort. This picture is the very first photo taken of the entire cohort together. Having a supportive yet challenging group of peers to help me grow and change over the last year has been inspiring.
Since the practice of self-reflection is very crucial to the work that I do with students, I have found it to be important for myself as well. Through means of journaling, sketching, verbalizing, and deep thought, I have tried to discover more of what I value during my time in graduate school. This photo of myself at the 2015 NASPA Dear World exhibit really shows some of that reflection — it reads, “You’re a person first”. Graduate school is a balancing act between personal life, social life, academics, work, internships, and wellness. The lesson that I must first take care of myself before I can serve others is crucial to this work, and I am thankful for the ongoing lesson in patience as I discover how to live into that mindset.
Although I enjoy learning individually, I have found that learning among a group of diverse peers is a surefire way to understand myself and others better. The group of professional colleagues that I have accumulated from my time at Florida State University have helped me to grow and change. I am so thankful for their love and support for the past two years!
